Rainwear
Rainwear is essential for people working in wet conditions. To keep your rainwear in good condition, make sure to hang it up to dry after use. Rolling it up while damp can cause it to wear out quickly.
Try to wash it as little as possible, as this will help it remain waterproof for longer.
When wearing it, ensure that the zips are done up, and the hood is over your head to prevent water from getting in.
Boots
Boots are essential to your safety, especially when working in wet or muddy conditions. To prolong the lifespan of your safety boots in wet conditions is advisable to swap for gumboots as often as possible. This will protect your safety boot's leather and sole.
Waterproofing spray or wax is also recommended for working in wet conditions. Make sure to dry the boots out at the end of the day by putting newspaper inside to absorb the moisture.
For zip-side boots, ensure the zip is done up to prevent extra wear on the back of the boot and to provide better protection for your ankles. If working in muddy conditions, clean the boots to allow them to dry out properly and prevent damage from mud.
Head Protection
Hard hats and helmets protect your head from impact, but they also need protection from wear and tear.
Never drop your hard hat or helmet, as this will weaken it. Note the date it was issued and ensure it hasn't expired. If there is any major impact on the helmet, seek to replace it as soon as possible, as it may not provide as much protection.
Don't leave your helmet in the sun, as UV exposure will weaken it.
Respiratory Gear
Respiratory gear is essential when working in environments with harmful fumes or particles. To ensure your respirator lasts longer:
- Keep it in a container when not in use to prevent the filters from filling up faster.
- Replace the cartridge when you notice a taste in your mouth or the filter as soon as it becomes harder to breathe.
