Those that wear Safety Boots or Shoes are often wearing them in all types of weather conditions in New Zealand. After all Auckland is known from its four seasons in one day, Wellington isn't called the windy city for no reason and Christchurch - one week - drought, next week - flood is not that uncommon.

So, what is the best way to make your work safety boots or shoes last longer?

Waterproofing

Having dry feet on a wet day is certainly something everyone can appreciate. You can waterproof your favourite boots easily and this will also help to preserve the boot and keep it looking good for a lot longer. Waterproofing comes in a wax or spray and takes no time at all to apply. Its best to clean your boot first and as soon as you notice the rain stop bouncing off the footwear, it's time to repeat the water proofing process.

Fit for purpose

Ensure the safety boot or shoe you are wearing is fit for purpose. Is the boot tough enough to withstand the rigors of the industry you are working in? Things to look for are: -

  • Slip resistance on what type of surfaces
  • Electrical hazard and heat resistance
  • Is the leather waterproof already
  • The penetration resistance of the sole
  • Does the steel toe cap meet the required safety standards?
  • Some boots like the Robuck Tasman Safety Boot also have a cushioning footbed for reduced fatigue and foot stress for the comfort of the wearer
Keep them clean

Make sure every day, you remove any excess dirt. If you have a black leather boot, apply some good old fashion nugget or polish weekly - this will keep the boot looking good and help it to last longer. Any fabric areas just give them a wipe with warm water. For the nubuck leather style of boot, a simple conditioning treatment will help them from cracking and getting old before their time.

Restore them

There is a lot to be said for taking your boots to a cobbler or shoe repair shop. They can re-sole some soles and repair stitching. Also, they'll give them a good clean up and condition and replace any laces which all help to extend the life of your safety boot or shoe.

How often should you replace your safety boots?

A runner who pounds the pavements for a one to two hours a day, seven to 14 hours a week, will wear their running sneakers out in about three to four months times. You are on your feet in your safety boots for anything from eight hours to ten hours a day, at least five days a week. That is 50hrs you are wearing them. Maybe not running a marathon in them but still pounding them on the job floor or work site.

Everyone is different as to how long their Safety Boots will last. We suggest you should replace them when either the sole is no longer griping or has cracks in it, if the leather upper is cracked or the steel toe is exposed, if any fabric is worn through or lastly if the sole is not providing support.
